The 10th anniversary tour of Waitress arrived at the Bristol Hippodrome last night, bringing the much-loved musical back to the city.
There’s no denying the talent on stage. The vocals throughout the cast were exceptional, with powerful performances that really showcased the score. The acting was equally strong, with the cast bringing warmth, humour and emotion to their roles, making the characters easy to invest in.
That said, I was surprised by the storyline, which felt a little weaker than I had expected. While there are touching moments and plenty of humour, I found the plot didn’t quite have the depth or impact I was anticipating.
However, Waitress has built up a huge following over the past decade, so it’s clear the story resonates with many people. Judging by the audience’s reaction, it’s a musical that continues to captivate fans old and new.
Even if the story wasn’t quite for me, the outstanding cast and memorable songs made it an enjoyable evening and a fitting celebration of this popular show’s 10th anniversary.
