During the interval I started talking to another audience member who had been to several Matthew Bourne productions and was recommending them highly. After last night’s production of Car Man I can understand why.
Before the show began the set dressing brought to the life the location of a small town in Mid-West America.
From the off I found myself wowed by the brilliant choreography and commitment to the balletic movements
and as soon as the characters stepped on stage to the final moment, the characterisation was impeccable!
I was even more impressed by the finer moments the actors created between each other.
A small change in facial expression, or a lingering look in the beginning portion of the show was foreshadowing what was to come later.
Being unfamiliar with the original production Carmen, that this production is based upon, I greatly enjoyed the story.
Lust, misuse of power and ultimately revenge, run throughout the show and the tension was built so high that I audibly gasped at the end of the show.

This show is definitely worth purchasing a ticket for and if you have the same reaction as me, you’ll be googling the next production coming into the city by Matthew Bourne.

Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man The show has a run time of 2 hours including a 20 minute interval. The recommended age is 15+. The production contains scenes of a sexual nature – including sexual assault, brief male nudity (frontal), smoking, strobe lighting, haze and gunshots. There are also scenes of a violent nature that include blood.
