Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical, is the dark and delicious tale of young golden ticket winner Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectionary wizard
This new production of the successful West End and Broadway musical is currently on its first tour and luckily has landed in Bristol at The Bristol Hippodrome.
With Charlie played by Isaac Sugden, the show had a great opening, watching Charlie look for treasure to help his impoverished family out.
Quite a touching scene
The Buckets home was a lovely set with the grandparents resting, seemingly precautiously in their double bed.
Lovely relationships were portrayed between Charlie and Mum, and obviously Charlie and Grandpa Joe with some BSL interpreting occurring – not sure why as not the whole show but it’s nice to see.
Willy Wonka (played by Gareth Snook) did a great job with fun and a superb voice singing both known movie tunes and additional numbers.
The cybermen-esque Oompa Loompas are very dark and sinister! As the book suggests they aren’t cute and cuddly but I was surprised by the interpretation! However they did their job brilliantly, clearing the stage of the dreadful children leaving Charlie the victor
- word of warning – several younger children were in tears so please bare the age guidance in mind.
With clever visual effects and a strong cast, this show needs to be seen to be appreciated. Not a huge phenomena but definitely worth a family night out
