‘Queen of the Night!’

The stage musical adaptation of The Bodyguard at the Bristol Hippodrome is an enjoyable, entertaining production that relies solely on Whitney Houston’s iconic catalogue.

While the narrative elements are mostly predictable, if you’ve seen the film, the show works effectively as a tribute concert wrapped in a romantic thriller framework performed beautifully.

Mireia Mambo delivered a technically precise and emotionally grounded performance as Rachel Marron. She successfully executed the demanding upper registers required for “I Will Always Love You” and “I Have Nothing” and performed just like the real thing in the ‘Queen of the Night’ – choreography and all!

The musical arrangements really shone during duets, particularly when the soulful, lower-register tones of Sasha Monique (playing the on-stage sister, Nicki Marron) contrasted with and balanced the main character’s belting style

The backing dancers provided sharp, highly athletic choreography that elevated the concert-style pop numbers adding to the whole production.

The excellent technical team used sudden sound effects, bright lighting, and intentional pyrotechnics to create tension and simulate a live concert environment with a nerve wracking opening which really quietened the audience down!

The whole show moved quickly between dialogue scenes and musical numbers, making it fast paced concluding with a fantastic upbeat ensemble performance during the curtain call for the whole audience to enjoy.
