Best results in school history

Merchants’ Academy Secondary students are celebrating some of the best results in the school’s history. These results are excellent in their own right however, especially so in light of the dramatic recent turnaround at the school.

The percentage of students obtaining a pass in both English and Maths has risen by an enormous 12% in only one year; an increase which will undoubtedly make the school one of the most improved across the city as a whole. Amongst the amazing set of results were some standout performances, which included Grade 9s (the very highest grade) for some students, amazing Science results and a host of positive results in Hair and Beauty, Construction and Sports Science.

Headteacher Mr Swallow commented, ‘I would like to start by congratulating our Year 11 students on their excellent results.

This year group has worked exceptionally hard to overcome all of the challenges in their way, have built wonderful relationships with the staff group and have bought into all of the strategies we have introduced in the past year. It is really pleasing to see the huge improvement in results compared with previous years and this reinforces the fact that our school really is on an amazing journey.

Despite the fact that today is about outcomes and exam results, I am very aware as a Headteacher that this is only part of the picture for our young people. For me, it is equally important that our students leave as respectful, confident young adults, who will be able to contribute to our community here in South Bristol. I would like to wish our outgoing Year 11 students the very best for the future and also remind them that we are always here should they need to get back in touch with us’.

Merchants’ Academy Secondary saw regular commendations last year for the work being undertaken to develop an inclusive, ambitious education for all students. The results of this Year 11 cohort can now be added to the remarkable improvements in student behaviour, attendance and community partnerships.
