Record number of piglets born in South Bristol

An adorable litter of piglets, believed to be the largest ever at Windmill Hill City Farm, has just been born.

On Wednesday, 23 July 2025, Windmill Hill City Farm announced the birth of 13 piglets in a video shared on both Instagram and Facebook. It’s an incredibly rare event for this breed of pig, a British Saddleback, as she gave birth to more than double the usual number for her first litter.

Windmill Hill City Farm shared the video with the caption: “For context, a sow of her breed would usually produce 4 – 6 piglets for her first litter. As you can tell, we are pretty surprised and excited to have so many healthy piglets at the farm. The sow and piglets are currently resting and feeding in their pen. Come by to the farm and you might catch a peak at them!”

The videos have attracted hundreds of likes and comments, with many locals sharing their excitement about the new arrivals.

The piglets are expected to stay at the farm for at least six months before some are moved to the Hartcliffe City Farm or sold to other nearby farms.

The farm is a 4.5 acre green space in South Bristol, home to community gardens, a café, a farm shop, and of course, a range of friendly animals. Entry is free, though donations are welcome, as the farm operates as a charity.

It’s a wonderful place to visit during the summer holidays, especially for a chance to see the piglets. Open seven days a week, including bank holidays, the farm also features a fantastic play area and plenty of picnic spots. While the site is fully accessible, do keep in mind that it’s still a working farm, so some paths may get muddy from time to time.

Established in 1976 by local residents and volunteers, it was the first city farm to open outside of London. Volunteers remain an essential part of the farm’s daily operations, helping with everything from gardening and maintenance to animal care and assisting in the café.

In addition to the animals, the farm often hosts seasonal events, workshops, and educational sessions for school groups and families.
