Bristol ‘mermaid’ to attempt monofin world record

Adventure mermaid and children’s author aims for monofin world record following Edinburgh Festival Fringe Performance this August

Bristol’s own adventure mermaid and children’s author Lindsey Cole is to embark on two remarkable journeys that blend environmental activism with captivating storytelling. Known for her daring swims and engaging children’s books, Lindsey has captured the hearts and minds of both the young and young at heart with her unique campaigns for clean waters and plastic awareness.

In September, Lindsey will attempt to break the world record for the longest monofin swim on World River Day on Sunday 28 September. This ambitious endeavour will see her ‘mermaid’ the length of the Bristol Avon in a continuous 24-hour swim. She will be supported by a dedicated team of friends in canoes. The swim aims to be testament to Lindsey’s endurance and commitment to environmental causes.

Ahead of her world record attempt, Lindsey will take her children’s show, The Mermaid, the Otter and the Big Poo, inspired by a previous swim across the Bristol Channel, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Last year, she swam from Wales to Clevedon in a mermaid tail, towing a symbolic big poo to highlight the need for clean waters. This adventure was immortalised in her children’s book of the same name, which she has now adapted into an educational performance. Having already mesmerised audiences at Glastonbury Festival this year, she is now gearing up to bring her show to the world-renowned Festival Fringe.

In 2018, Lindsey swam the length of the River Thames to raise awareness about plastic pollution, a journey that included rescuing a drowning cow. As she prepares for her latest challenges, Lindsey reflects on her journey: “I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling and adventure to inspire change. Through my swims and books, I hope to raise awareness and encourage others to protect our precious waterways.”
